As they saying goes, practice is the best teacher. This is especially true when contractors are considering purchasing blasting equipment. However, everyday practice usually shows that too little thought results in blasting solutions not meeting the expectation. To avoid making costly mistakes, you should take a close and thorough look at all the possible blasting solutions (of which there are many) before deciding what method and equipment will really fit your blasting needs. Finally, if possible before you should try before you buy.

That’s why Gritco recently set up a unique, professional Experience Centre where blasting specialists and companies can get advice on the wide range of high quality, innovative blasting equipment, and personally experience the different blasting possibilities, and media, in practice.

There is a choice of, pressure blasting, wet/vapour blasting, soda blasting, fine blasting and vacuum blasting methods, including blasting cabinets, blast pots, vacuum blasting machines, after coolers, dust extractors and personal protection.

PRA Training Courses

The schedule for 2021 training courses is now available at www.pra-world.com, and bookings are now being taken. All courses are held virtually with a strict limit of 15 participants.

The next course of possible interest to readers is:
Paint Technology, 19 – 22 April 2021
This course has been designed for newcomers to the industry who need a firm foundation in the technology of organic surface coatings. To gain maximum benefit from the course it is helpful if delegates have a knowledge of chemistry to university entrance standard.
It is a comprehensive and intensive four day course that contains an overview of the raw materials used in surface coatings and their contribution to the final properties of the coatings. The study of coating systems emphasises the changes taking place in modern technology.

The cost is £1,850

Degradation of Structural Materials for Net-Zero 2050. A Landscaping Exercise

The Henry Royce Institute, working in collaboration with Frazer-Nash Consultancy, has been funded by the EPSRC to undertake a review of the key degradation issues affecting structural materials critical to delivering the UK’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The primary objective of the review is to identify key research and development drivers that present opportunities for investment which the UK can exploit to ensure the transition occurs in a safe, timely and efficient manner. Topics that are common to several industries or which could slow or prevent the transition will be highlighted.

The study focuses on five key industries that will play a pivotal role in the transition which are:

  • Wind power generation (onshore and offshore).
  • Transportation (Air, Road, Rail and Sea).
  • Nuclear fission (not fusion).
  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
  • Hydrogen production and usage (end to end including hydrogen substitutes such as ammonia).

The project is looking for contributions from people with both industrial and/or academic expertise in these industries to identify the current structural degradation landscape and your experience would be extremely valuable. The attached short questionnaire has been developed to gather key information and I would be grateful if you would complete it to provide your input.

The project is working to a very tight timeline and so your response by 14th March 2021 would be appreciated. Ideally, we would like as much information as possible but given the short response time we would be grateful for your initial thoughts on this and, if we need more detail, we can follow up later. If you have expertise in more than one area, please focus on the one you are most familiar with or use a separate sheet for each one.

If you have any questions, then please contact:

New Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP)

The new organisation, the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), was formed by the merger between NACE International and SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, and aims to provide a unified voice for the corrosion control and protective coatings industries.

AMPP consists of two governance structure; AMPP, which will provide services to members in the areas of certification, accreditation, membership, advocacy and public affairs, and AMPP Global Center, which will focus on standards, technical and research activities, conferences, events, education, training, publications and pre-professional programming. The CEO of the new organisation is Bob Chalker, previously CEO of NACE.
