The Henry Royce Institute, working in collaboration with Frazer-Nash Consultancy, has been funded by the EPSRC to undertake a review of the key degradation issues affecting structural materials critical to delivering the UK’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The primary objective of the review is to identify key research and development drivers that present opportunities for investment which the UK can exploit to ensure the transition occurs in a safe, timely and efficient manner. Topics that are common to several industries or which could slow or prevent the transition will be highlighted.
The study focuses on five key industries that will play a pivotal role in the transition which are:
- Wind power generation (onshore and offshore).
- Transportation (Air, Road, Rail and Sea).
- Nuclear fission (not fusion).
- Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
- Hydrogen production and usage (end to end including hydrogen substitutes such as ammonia).
The project is looking for contributions from people with both industrial and/or academic expertise in these industries to identify the current structural degradation landscape and your experience would be extremely valuable. The attached short questionnaire has been developed to gather key information and I would be grateful if you would complete it to provide your input.
The project is working to a very tight timeline and so your response by 14th March 2021 would be appreciated. Ideally, we would like as much information as possible but given the short response time we would be grateful for your initial thoughts on this and, if we need more detail, we can follow up later. If you have expertise in more than one area, please focus on the one you are most familiar with or use a separate sheet for each one.
