New Approved ICATS Training Centre, South Wales:
For the Managing Director at Supply Project Solutions (SPS), Peter Smith, the introduction of ICATS training wasn’t just a skills directive, as he believed it had a much wider significance than that. He thought it was vital to the future of the industry as a whole, and explains why.
“It’s hard to believe an industry that has employed thousands of people over decades hasn’t had a recognised training course until the start of ICATS. We must continually improve people and company attitudes towards training and safety, and ICATS fits the bill completely”.
SPS offer inspection services, paint supply as well as ICATS
training from their offices in Cardiff, South Wales. The MD, Peter Smith, has many years of experience in the coatings industry and is a font of knowledge in all things paint. SPS can be contacted on enquiries@supplyprojectsolutions.co.uk

New Courses
2022 will see the creation of new ICATS courses. There have been discussions within the CORREX board and national UK contractors who wanted ICATS add-on modules. These new modules will include, water jetting, thermal metal spray and marine coatings.
Seminars
In accordance with the ICATS regulations, a series of seminars should have been held to update our valued clients and trainers on all matters ICATS. We have been unable to do that in the last couple of years due to Covid 19. Therefore, we will be creating an online version in the next couple of months to inform everyone about ICATS activities and updates.
New Approved Training Centre Scotland
IMechE Fife NDT became an approved Industrial Coatings Applicator Training Scheme (ICATS) training facility. They are now able to provide Industrial Coating Applicator (ICA) training courses from their facility in Dunfermline, Scotland.
Industrial coatings applicators play a key role in protecting the nation’s infrastructure from deterioration. The cost and complexity of modern high-performance coatings has resulted in a high demand for skilled industrial coatings applicators to ensure correct preparation and application, reducing the risk of coating failures and defects, which can be extremely costly for businesses to rectify.
Many organisations now require industrial coatings professionals to be ICATS qualified to undertake work onsite, including the Highways Agency, Network Rail, the Environment Agency, and many oil companies. Chris Kirby, General Manager at IMechE Fife NDT said, “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to support organisations with upskilling their employees and helping them gain industry-recognised qualifications”.
The Industrial Coating Applicator (ICA) course is delivered by a qualified protective coating inspector, who has many years practical experience working on challenging applications all over the world and is also a Fellow of the Institute of Corrosion.
“We have worked closely with IMechE Fife NDT over the past couple of months and we are excited to see the first three ICA training courses being delivered to industrial coatings professionals in the Scottish region later this month”, said Kevin Harold, Managing Director of CORREX Ltd.
