Guiding Professional Development and Training

Established by the Council of the Institute of Corrosion in 2006, the Professional Development and Training Committee (PDTC) is dedicated to providing state of the art ICorr training and certification schemes for Continuing Professional Development programs.

This committee is critical in the delivery of the Institute of Corrosion’s core values and objectives of sharing ICorr’s expertise with the world.

Structure of PDTC

The PDTC is led by a council-appointed chair, and currently has 10 members. These are selected from a diverse range of disciplines – experts in fields such as cathodic protection, coatings, inspection, standards, and other corrosion-related topics like microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC).

The PDTC also oversees the work of two sub-committees:  the Surface Treatment Governing Board (STGB) and the Cathodic Protection Governing Board (CPGB). These sub-committees report directly to the PDTC Chair, as do the scheme managers for surface treatment and cathodic protection related coursework and examination material delivered by, or on behalf of, ICorr.

Each member of the PDTC is a professional member of ICorr, with a solid understanding of the Institute’s processes, values, and ethics.

At present, members of the PDTC include the vice president and past presidents of ICorr, surface treatment and CP scheme managers, sub-committee chairs, consultants, and technical experts.

Roles and Responsibilities of PDTC

As its name suggests, the PDTC has overarching responsibility to ensure that all training and professional development courses and exams offered by ICorr or its training partners are of the highest quality and relevant to the evolving corrosion industry.

As part of its role, PDTC is responsible for reviewing and approving the technical content of training courses submitted by the two sub-committees. This robust mechanism ensures that training content:

  • Is suitable for market demand
  • Enhances the portfolio of ICorr offerings
  • Continues to improve course availability to the market

In execution of its responsibilities, the PDTC also collaborates with other committees. These include the Membership Development Committee, Young ICorr, Corrosion Engineering Division (CED), Corrosion Science Division (CSD), Professional Assessment Committee (PAC), and others to create new and exciting training opportunities.

However, the PDTC doesn’t only focus on training and education. It also works towards expanding the Institute’s membership and promoting the science, engineering, and technical aspects of corrosion control to the wider public.

Are you the future of the PDTC?

The Institute is run by its members for the benefit of its members. The PDTC plays a key role in our work. However, its success – as with the success of all our committees and the work we do – depends on the dedicated work of the committee’s members.

We know that our members have much to offer to the wider corrosion community. If you would like to become involved with the PDTC, its sub-committees, or any of our working groups and other committees, please contact our President, Stephen Tate, by email at president@icorr.org.
